The Clarion Call

A clarion call is a strong request for something to happen. Answering such a call is often defined as one of purpose, a challenge to the status quo, or being on a dedicated mission that makes a difference in the end.

In my experience, I have found that supporting organizations and causes with a mission and answering such a call to action is an enriching encounter. It's not just about making a difference; it's about personal growth and fulfillment. These days, doing nothing is not an option. At my age, doing nothing is my definition of dead.

Let’s explore the definition of support and how you answer such a call.

I define support in terms of time, talent, and treasure.

Time to deeply understand the mission and the reason why the mission is needed in the first place. Time to listen and meet the people doing the work and the people and places impacted by the work. Time to understand how impact is created and sustained. This understanding is crucial for effective support. Time to understand the why of the work and the root causes of the need for such work.

Talent is defined in two ways here. First, can you bring personal skills beyond financial support to the table? Second, can you understand and support the talent needed to meet the mission?  Third, can you be an advocate for the work and the changes required to accomplish the mission?

Treasure is providing financial support and opening your network to obtain additional

support. My observation is that if one spends time and talent, the ability to give and get support increases and sets an example for others. The amount of support is less significant than the data point that it is an individually meaningful gift.

Answering the call is the commitment of time, talent, treasure, and a passion for the cause that rises to the definition of clarion. Specifically, it is a solid call to make something happen. President Teddy Roosevelt said that it is the man  ( or woman) in the Arena that counts.

On so many issues today, we need to get off the sideline, get into the Arena, and answer the clarion calls of our time.

What is your clarion call?

Answer it!
